Historic 72nd North Eastern Council Plenary in Tripura: Empowering the Region’s Future Today!
The 72nd Plenary of the North Eastern Council (NEC) kicks off today in Agartala, Tripura, marking the city’s second hosting since 2008. This two-day event begins with a technical session where central ministries will present developmental plans for the North Eastern Region (NER). The main plenary session on Saturday will feature significant attendees, including Union Home Minister and NEC Chairman Amit Shah, DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Minister of State Sukanta Majumdar, two NEC members, and top officials from the eight northeastern states.
Agartala’s selection underscores its rising influence in regional development, deviating from the usual hosts, Shillong and Guwahati. This choice reflects the NEC’s evolving focus on holistic growth across the entire region. Since its establishment in 1971 and subsequent inauguration in 1972 by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the NEC has transitioned from an advisory body to a crucial regional planning agency, enhancing connectivity and investment.
With Sikkim’s incorporation in 2002, the NEC’s expanded mandate has led to significant achievements, such as constructing over 11,500 kilometers of roads, increasing power generation, and improving airport infrastructure. Additionally, it played a key role in establishing institutions like the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) and North Eastern Electrical Power Corporation (NEEPCO).
The plenary sessions in Agartala promise strategic discussions aimed at accelerating socio-economic development and ensuring regional parity with the rest of India. The NEC’s ongoing transformation continues to highlight its importance in fostering growth across the northeastern states.
