Historic India-France Pact Ignites Excitement: Transforming North and South Blocks into Iconic Museums
India and France have formalized a significant agreement to transform the historic North and South Blocks in New Delhi into a vast national museum, part of the Central Vista Redevelopment Project. This initiative aims to create the world’s largest museum, surpassing even the renowned Louvre in Paris, spanning an impressive 1.55 lakh square meters. The project will be executed in two phases, with the North Block’s conversion slated for completion by June 2026. Already, initial mapping of the North Block has been undertaken with guidance from France Museums Development, leveraging their expertise to ensure the building’s heritage is preserved.
The collaborative effort includes a comprehensive feasibility study that will draw on France’s museum development experience, particularly insights from the Grand Louvre. This study will cover museum cases, interpretative planning, and building programming. Union Culture Minister Gajendra Shekhawat emphasized France’s pivotal role in shaping the project, given its history in developing world-class cultural sites.
Under the Central Vista plan, current office functions housed within the North and South Blocks will transition to the Common Central Secretariat buildings by 2025, freeing space for the museum’s development. After vacating the premises, restoration efforts will focus on returning North Block to its original state, removing modifications added since New Delhi’s inauguration in 1931.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted that this cultural collaboration strengthens India-France ties in a multipolar world, underscoring both nations’ independent stances and shared heritage.
This adaptive reuse project not only aligns with initiatives like France’s ‘Grands Projets’ but also represents a commitment to cultural preservation and international partnership, promising to add a new dimension to global museum landscapes.
