China’s Bold Move: Rocket Launch to Soar Over Taiwan’s Air Defense Zone on December 20
China to Launch Rocket Over Taiwan’s Air Defence Zone on December 20
China is preparing to launch a rocket carrying a satellite that is expected to traverse Taiwan’s Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ) on December 20, according to a statement by Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND), as reported by Taipei Times. This event reflects a continuing pattern, with China having launched over a dozen satellites in the past two years, many of which have taken similar flight paths. Though these launches cross into Taiwan’s ADIZ, they have not threatened the island’s security, as the rockets enter space before approaching the region.
The satellite will be launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center located in Sichuan Province, and its trajectory will head towards the Western Pacific, passing over Taiwan’s ADIZ. The ADIZ is an area where a country asserts a right to identify and manage approaching foreign aircraft, although it does not constitute territorial airspace under international law.
Meanwhile, the MND has been vigilant in providing routine updates on China’s military operations near Taiwan, aiming to maintain public awareness. In the latest development, the MND reported the detection of ten People’s Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft and five naval vessels around Taiwan. Notably, four Chinese warplanes crossed the Taiwan Strait’s median line, a boundary viewed as a tense political line.
In response, Taiwan’s military forces are monitoring the situation closely, utilizing mission aircraft, naval vessels, and coastal missile systems to ensure readiness and security. These activities underscore the continuous and strategic observation of military movements in the Taiwan Strait, emphasizing the tensions in the region. The MND’s detailed updates aim to provide transparency and maintain confidence among the Taiwanese public regarding regional military activities.
This launch and ongoing military surveillance highlight the intricate dynamics and underlying tensions between China and Taiwan in the region’s airspace and surrounding waters.
