Iran’s Khamenei Sparks Controversy with Bold Tweet: ‘Women Are Flowers, Not Housemaids’ – A Powerful Call for Respect
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, recently drew attention with comments on women’s roles, referring to them as “delicate flowers” in a tweet. He emphasized the importance of respecting women and highlighted their roles within the family. “A woman should be treated like a flower in the home. A flower needs to be cared for, and its freshness and sweet scent should be appreciated,” Khamenei stated.
In a subsequent post, he elaborated on gender roles, asserting that men and women contribute differently to family dynamics. Khamenei noted that men are typically responsible for financial expenses, while women are associated with childbearing, emphasizing that these roles do not imply superiority but reflect different merits.
His comments coincide with increased scrutiny over Iran’s treatment of women, particularly following discontent related to the country’s strict hijab laws. Recently, Iran’s National Security Council deferred the “hijab and chastity law,” pointing to ambiguities amid both domestic and international criticism. Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, have criticized Iran’s policies for reinforcing repression against women.
Furthermore, Khamenei has accused the US and Israel of attempting to destabilize the region by allegedly plotting to remove Syria’s former president Bashar al-Assad from power and undermining Iran’s position in Syria.
These developments underscore ongoing tensions regarding women’s rights within Iran and the country’s geopolitical stance amid global condemnation.
