Tragic Mumbai Harbour Ferry Accident: Search Efforts Intensify as 13 Lives Lost
GUWAHATI: A tragic ferry accident in Mumbai Harbour on December 18 has led to an ongoing search and rescue operation by the Indian Navy and Coast Guard. The mishap claimed 13 lives, with two individuals, including a man and a boy, still missing.
The incident unfolded when an Indian Navy ship, during an engine test, lost control and collided with a passenger ferry carrying about 110 people, including 20 children. The severe impact caused the ferry to capsize. Among those on the naval ship, four marines died, and one remains critically injured.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that 105 passengers were hospitalized, with 90 in stable condition and two critically injured. In response, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and announced ₹2 lakh in financial aid from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the families of the deceased. Additionally, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis pledged ₹5 lakh in compensation for the victims’ families.
The Indian Navy has launched a Board of Inquiry to investigate the cause of the collision, working alongside other agencies like the Mumbai police to ascertain whether the accident was due to technical failure or human error.
As rescue efforts continue, authorities are focused on unraveling the details of this tragic incident to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
