Transformational Grant: Sikkim’s Van Dhan Vikas Kendras Secure Rs. 51.76 Lakh to Empower Tribal Communities
On December 18, 2024, the Cooperation Department of Sikkim took a significant step in empowering tribal communities by distributing Rs. 51.76 lakh as grants to seven Van Dhan Vikas Kendras (VDVKs). The event, hosted at Sahakari Bhawan in Tadong, was spearheaded by Arun Kumar Upreti, the Hon’ble Minister of Cooperation and Rural Development, and attended by prominent officials, including the Secretary, Principal Registrar, and Additional Registrar.
Gloria Namchu, Secretary of the Cooperation Department, emphasized the pivotal role of the PM Van Dhan Yojana (PM VDY) in creating livelihood opportunities for Sikkim’s tribal communities. She noted that 80 Van Dhan Vikas Kendras have been set up across the state, with 77 already operational. The scheme is designed to foster the formation of 14 Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and one Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society (MPCS) per Kendra, benefiting approximately 300 individuals per cluster.
The seven VDVKs receiving the grants are located across various districts: Lingchom Tinga, Sakyong Pentong, Tingvong, and Tingchim Chadey in Mangan District; Sardong Lungchik in Gyalshing; Buraikhop in Soreng; and Chuba Perbing in Namchi District, sharing a total distribution of Rs. 51,76,350.
An informative video on the PM VDY scheme was showcased during the event, highlighting its benefits and impact. Minister Upreti commended the initiative for its transformative impact, particularly concerning forest produce, and assured continued state support. He urged the Cooperation Department to enhance marketing strategies for products developed under the scheme.
Upreti called on beneficiaries to diligently seize the opportunities provided by the PM Van Dhan Yojana, promoting sustainable development and empowerment for Sikkim’s tribal populace.
