Breaking News: Meghalaya Governor Triumphantly Approves Crucial Election Dates for KHADC and JHADC!
Meghalaya Governor CH Vijayashankar has sanctioned February 21, 2025, as the election date for the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC), with results to be announced on February 24. This schedule was finalized by the state cabinet, outlining several crucial dates: the election notification will be issued on January 27, candidate nominations must be submitted by February 3, scrutinized the same day, and any withdrawals must be finalized by February 4.
The process for updating electoral rolls begins with the publication of draft rolls on January 13. Stakeholders must submit claims and objections by January 22, with resolution by January 24, leading to the release of final rolls on January 27. The model code of conduct will be enforced on this same date, as confirmed by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who handles district council affairs.
Political preparations are underway, with parties beginning to reveal their candidates for the elections. The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has announced candidates for all 29 constituencies across both councils. The National People’s Party (NPP) unveiled candidates for 18 seats in KHADC and 29 in JHADC. Meanwhile, the Khasi Hills National Development Movement (KHNAM) has fielded eight contenders for the KHADC. Other parties, including the United Democratic Party (UDP), Congress, HSPDP, BJP, and Trinamool Congress, have yet to make their announcements.
These elections follow the extension of KHADC and JHADC terms, initially meant to conclude in March, but postponed twice due to constituency delimitation. Anticipation is building as candidates and parties strategize for the forthcoming electoral contest, marking a significant event in the region’s political landscape.
