Amit Shah Unveils Explosive Truth: 4 Constitutional Amendments Driven by Personal Gain vs. 4 Championing Public Welfare in Congress Showdown
New Delhi, Dec 17: In a heated debate on the Constitution in the Rajya Sabha, Union Home Minister Amit Shah criticized the Congress governments led by Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi for their approach to constitutional amendments. Shah accused these administrations of prioritizing the interests of a single family, pointing out that Congress enacted 77 amendments over 55 years compared to the BJP’s 22 amendments during its 16 years in power.
Shah took a subtle jab at Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, hinting at his self-proclaimed status as a youth leader and his intention to amend the Constitution. He emphasized that the amendments under Congress were largely self-serving, contrasting them with BJP’s amendments, which he claimed were oriented towards national welfare.
He particularly criticized several Congress-era amendments: the first in 1951 to restrict free expression, the 24th in 1971 granting Parliament extensive powers, the controversial 39th in 1975 following the Allahabad High Court’s ruling against Indira Gandhi, and the 45th which extended the Lok Sabha’s tenure. Shah argued these exemplified Congress’s attempts to consolidate power for familial and personal gains.
In contrast, Shah highlighted BJP’s recent amendments, notably the 101st, which introduced the Goods and Services Tax (GST) to create a uniform tax system benefitting millions. He also noted the 102nd amendment giving constitutional status to the OBC commission, the 103rd offering a 10% reservation to economically weaker sections, and the 106th which aimed to empower women through a 33% reservation in the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.
Concluding, Shah underscored that BJP’s amendments serve the national interest and foresee empowering women MPs as a fulfilment of the envisioned future by India’s forefathers.
