Heartbreaking Crisis: Over 880,000 People Tragically Displaced in Syria, Urges UN Action
The United Nations has reported that over 880,000 individuals have been displaced amid intensified hostilities in Syria. According to UN humanitarians, around 6% of these displaced persons live with a disability. Return movements are ongoing, with more than 220,000 people returning to their homes recently. Furthermore, over 40,000 displaced individuals are currently residing in approximately 250 collective centers across northeast Syria.
In response to the crisis, the UN and its partners are providing essential aid, including food, water, cash, tents, and medical assistance. Notably, the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and UNICEF have conducted a joint operation at the Tishreen Dam in Aleppo governorate for urgent repairs. UNICEF also ensured fuel supply for the dam’s backup generator to stabilize water services disrupted by recent conflicts and power outages, impacting millions.
UN Under-Secretary-General Tom Fletcher is actively engaging with regional authorities to discuss relief efforts, visiting Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, and Jordan as part of his Middle East tour. Across the Lebanon-Syria border, a complex flow of displaced people continues. Since December 8, fewer than 10,000 Syrian refugees have reportedly returned from Lebanon, while Lebanese authorities estimate that around 30,000 people—mainly Syrians and some Lebanese—have moved back from Syria to Lebanon following a cessation of hostilities announced on November 27.
The International Organisation for Migration has described the situation as fluid, with movements across both formal and informal border crossings continuing daily. Earlier reports highlighted that Syrian border officials abandoned their posts after the Damascus takeover. This humanitarian response underscores the challenges and dynamic shifts in the region amidst ongoing conflict and displacement.
