Science News: December Asteroid Flybys Pose No Immediate Threat to Earth
This December, three massive asteroids are set to closely pass by Earth, sparking both intrigue and vigilance within the astronomical community. These near-Earth objects (NEOs), though not on a collision course this time around, are subjects of close observation due to their potential future threat.
On December 16, asteroid 2024 VE7, the largest of the trio, will come within 2.79 million kilometers of Earth. An Apollo-class asteroid with a highly elliptical orbit, it has been identified for its relatively close approach despite its moderate size, characterized by an absolute magnitude of 24.49. Its next notable approach will not occur until 2124, but continuous monitoring remains crucial to track any orbital changes.
Accompanying VE7 is asteroid 2024 XY5, which will pass Earth at approximately 3.5 million kilometers away. With an absolute magnitude of 25.96, XY5’s orbit is less inclined, completing approximately every 467 days. It is slated for another close flyby in April 2025, distancing Earth by 28 million kilometers at that time.
Lastly, asteroid 2024 XE16 will join the cosmic lineup, flying by at approximately 6.8 million kilometers. This asteroid, with an orbital period of 580 days, travels at a moderate speed of 3.68 km/s relative to Earth. While XE16’s current path presents no imminent danger, astronomers continue to track its trajectory to ascertain any potential future risks.
These celestial events underline the importance of constant vigilance by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and other space organizations. Observations from these flybys not only contribute vital data for planetary defense initiatives but also enhance our understanding of asteroid trajectories and their interactions with other celestial bodies.
