Triumph in the Skies: Indian Air Force Celebrates Historic Commissioning of Pioneering Weapon Systems Officers

The Indian Air Force (IAF) marked a historic achievement as the inaugural cohort of its newly formed Weapon Systems Branch graduated from the Air Force Academy (AFA) in Dundigal, near Hyderabad. During the Combined Graduation Parade, a total of 204 cadets, including 26 women from the flying and ground duty streams, were commissioned as flying officers. The event was overseen by Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, the Chief of the Air Staff.

The Weapon Systems Branch, designed to bring together weapon system operators, involves a two-step training process. Initial training takes place at the AFA, with further advanced instruction at the newly established Weapon Systems School in Begumpet, Hyderabad. This comprehensive program aims to equip officers with the necessary expertise to manage advanced weapon systems.

Introduced by then-Air Chief Marshal Vivek Ram Chaudhari during the 2022 Air Force Day in Chandigarh, the Weapon Systems Branch stands as the IAF’s first operational branch since Independence. Chaudhari highlighted the branch’s strategic importance in combining operators of various missile systems, remotely piloted aircraft, and weapons on multi-crew aircraft.

The branch is anticipated to save more than Rs 3,400 crore by optimizing operational training expenses, a significant step towards enhancing IAF’s modernization and adaptability to contemporary warfare needs.

The Weapon Systems Branch is stratified into four operational sub-streams:

  1. Flying Operations: Operators serve on aircraft such as the Su-30MKI, Apache AH-64E, Mi-25/35, and C-130J Super Hercules.

  2. Remote Operations: Operators manage UAVs for diverse missions, with technology sourced from global and domestic providers.

  3. Intelligence Operations: Officers analyze surveillance imagery, handle information warfare, and manage space systems for intelligence purposes.

  4. Missile Operations: This stream focuses on deploying and managing surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles.

This advancement aligns with IAF’s ongoing efforts to modernize and meet the challenges of current warfare scenarios effectively.
