ZPM’s Historic Bid: Empowering Change in Chakma Autonomous District Council with Bold Government Stake
Members of the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) in the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) are scheduled to meet Mizoram Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati at Raj Bhavan on Monday. The purpose of the meeting is to formally assert their right to form a government in the 20-member council, following a significant political shift.
The ZPM has gained a majority in the CADC after five members of the Mizo National Front (MNF) switched allegiance to their party last Wednesday. This defection occurred on the heels of a no-confidence motion that led to the removal of Chief Executive Member (CEM) Rasik Mohan Chakma of the MNF during the council session on December 11.
Originally, the MNF had established the 11th CADC after securing 10 seats in the election held on May 9, 2023. However, in the wake of recent changes, the MNF has been reduced to just one seat, retained by Rasik Mohan Chakma. The current composition of the CADC is 10 members from the ZPM, 9 from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and 1 from the MNF.
This development marks a significant political transformation within the council, reflecting the shifting alliances and dynamics in the region’s political landscape.
