Urgent Appeal: ZPM MDCs Urge Government Action Today to Establish New Chakma Council | Empowering Guwahati News
Aizawl: Political Shift in CADC as ZPM Stakes Claim to Form Council
In a significant political development, members of the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) in the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) are scheduled to meet Mizoram Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati on Monday at Raj Bhavan. This gathering aims to assert their claim to form the next council in the district. The move comes after five Mizo National Front (MNF) members of the district council (MDCs) defected to the ZPM, creating a new balance of power.
ZPM president Lalliansawta expressed that while the party does not seek to destabilize any existing government within autonomous district councils, it welcomes new members who join willingly. The collapse of the MNF-led administration, previously headed by Chief Executive Member Rasik Mohan Chakma, occurred last Wednesday following a no-trust motion in the council session.
The current composition of the CADC consists of 10 ZPM MDCs, 9 Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MDCs, and a solitary MNF MDC. The MNF had initially secured the council by winning 10 seats in the elections held on May 9, 2023, and gaining support from 4 additional MDCs shortly thereafter. However, following defections, the MNF now finds itself reduced to a single MDC.
Further political maneuvering saw the BJP increase its representation to 9 MDCs, up from 5, as 8 MDCs joined its ranks. Initially gaining no seats in the last council elections, the ZPM now commands a majority with 10 MDCs, following recent defections from the MNF.
As the political landscape in the CADC shifts, the ZPM will officially stake its claim to lead the council, marking a new chapter in the region’s governance.
