Mukesh Khanna’s Bold Stand: Why He Rejected YRF’s Offer for Shaktimaan Rights and Told Aditya Chopra ‘No’
Veteran actor Mukesh Khanna, famed for his portrayal of superhero Shaktimaan, recently shared insights about rejecting a lucrative offer from Yash Raj Films (YRF) to purchase the character’s rights. In a candid interview with Siddharth Kannan on YouTube, Khanna revealed that a decade ago, Aditya Chopra’s team approached him to acquire Shaktimaan’s rights. Reflecting on that episode, Khanna recounted, “I was contacted by Aditya Chopra’s group who asked if I would give them the rights to Shaktimaan.” Coincidentally, this offer came when a fan-made image of Ranveer Singh as Shaktimaan was gaining traction on social media. However, Khanna stood firm in his decision, stating, “Rights nahin doonga main (I won’t give the rights).”
Khanna expressed his apprehensions about YRF’s potential creative direction, fearing a deviation from Shaktimaan’s core essence. He bluntly stated, “Tell Aditya, whoever he is, if you want to make it, make it with me. I didn’t want to give away the rights just for them to make a disco drama, so I refused.”
On the topic of resurrecting the character for modern cinema, Khanna shared his views on potential actors fit for the role. While he recognized Allu Arjun as a compelling candidate, he dismissed the idea of Ranveer Singh donning the Shaktimaan mantle. “I have to watch more Allu Arjun films. He has the personality to pull it off,” Khanna remarked, adding that he’s merely suggesting possibilities rather than confirming any involvement.
In an earlier video on his YouTube channel, Khanna took a playful jab at Akshay Kumar’s portrayal of Prithviraj Chauhan, humorously noting, “Sirf muche aur wig lagaake thodi na ban sakte hai?” This comment underlines Khanna’s emphasis on authenticity and commitment in portraying legendary characters.
