Shivering Surprise: Delhi Experiences Season’s Coldest Morning as Mercury Plummets!
Delhi Experiences Coldest Morning of the Season Amid Smog and Poor Air Quality
New Delhi faced its coldest December morning this Wednesday, with temperatures dipping to 4.9°C in the Safdarjung area and 6.2°C in Palam, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). The chill in the air persisted until around 9 AM, compounded by smog and mist resulting from surface winds from the northwest blowing at eight to ten kilometers per hour.
The city was enveloped in a thin fog layer, while the air quality remained poor for the second consecutive day. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), early morning AQI readings showed 209, with areas like Anand Vihar and Dwarka recording even higher levels of pollution, at 218 and 250, respectively. In contrast, Aya Nagar and Chandni Chowk recorded moderate air quality with AQIs of 148 and 181.
Monday and Tuesday also saw poor air quality with AQIs of 231 and 224, affected by a noticeable smog that hampered visibility. In different city parts, Monday’s AQI showed concerning figures, with Dwarka Sector 8 hitting 291 and Mundka reaching 315, indicating very poor air quality.
The CPCB classifies AQI from 0-50 as good, 51-100 as satisfactory, 101-200 as moderate, and 201-300 as poor, emphasizing that the current levels pose health risks to the public. Residents are advised to take precautions as these conditions persist. The blend of cold weather and air quality issues highlights a taxing environmental challenge for Delhi. The IMD continues to monitor the situation, urging vigilance and preparedness as the city navigates this harsh weather phase.
