Enhanced Vigilance: Assam Forest Department Intensifies Rhino Protection in Wildlife Sanctuaries

The Assam Forest Department has ramped up conservation efforts for the greater one-horned rhinoceros within the Laokhowa and Burhachapori Wildlife Sanctuaries, vital habitats serving as buffer zones for the renowned Kaziranga Tiger Reserve. Historically home to a flourishing rhino population, these sanctuaries suffered significant losses due to poaching amid the socio-political upheaval of the 1980s. Encouragingly, recent observations indicate a slow but steady ecological revival, with transient rhinos from Kaziranga and Orang National Parks returning to these areas.

The Assam government has been instrumental in restoring habitat connectivity among Burhachapori Wildlife Sanctuary, Orang National Park, and Kaziranga National Park through strategic expansions and enhanced corridors along the Brahmaputra River. This initiative has aided the natural dispersal and settlement of rhinos, some of which are now making these sanctuaries their permanent homes.

To bolster these conservation efforts, the Nagaon Wildlife Division conducted a one-day rapid orientation programme on December 7, aimed at equipping frontline staff with advanced monitoring and patrolling skills. Led by Divisional Forest Officer Jayanta Deka and supported by conservation experts from Aaranyak — including Dr. Bibhab Kumar Talukdar, Dr. Deba Kumar Dutta, and Arup Das — the programme involved approximately 100 staff members across three sanctuary locations. Participants received hands-on training focused on habitat security and scientific monitoring techniques.

This initiative is a significant step toward restoring the sanctuaries as thriving rhino habitats, aligning with the goals of the Indian Rhino Vision’s next phase. Local communities in the Nagaon district eagerly anticipate rhino translocations to establish a sustainable population. This collaborative effort highlights the dedication of conservationists, local communities, and forest officials to protect these majestic creatures and restore the ecological value of Laokhowa and Burhachapori Wildlife Sanctuaries.
