Thrilling Progress: New Delhi’s Strategic Engagements with Dhaka Unveiled by Indian Foreign Secretary
New Delhi is seeking to strengthen its relationship with Bangladesh’s interim government through increased engagement and collaborative efforts, as conveyed by Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri during his visit to Dhaka. In a meeting with Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna, Misri emphasized the mutual benefits of enhancing bilateral ties and expressed India’s desire to continue from where previous interactions had left off.
The 40-minute discussion covered a range of topics, including the welfare of minorities, combating misinformation, and regional cooperation. The status of ousted dictator Sheikh Hasina, who is currently in India, was notably addressed, with Yunus expressing concerns over her influence and the tensions it generates back home.
Yunus described the relationship between Bangladesh and India as “very solid” and urged cooperation to clear any misunderstandings overshadowing recent interactions. He highlighted the recent mass uprising that ended Hasina’s regime and shared the interim government’s reform initiatives, aimed at fostering a “new Bangladesh.”
Misri reiterated that India values its relationship with Bangladesh beyond political affiliations and seeks to nurture a prosperous future for both nations. He also outlined India’s ongoing support for the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) amidst existing challenges.
On matters of minority rights, Yunus assured that his government is committed to protecting all citizens, promoting unity, and safeguarding their rights irrespective of background or gender. Misri affirmed India’s commitment to strong bilateral cooperation and noted an increase in visa allocations for Bangladeshis, signaling an intent to foster closer ties.
The interaction underscored the importance of maintaining robust bilateral relations, with both parties expressing a desire to overcome hurdles and work collectively towards regional stability and prosperity.
