Dibrugarh: The Maguri-Motapung beel, a once thriving wetland near Dibru-Saikhowa National Park in Assam’s Tinsukia district, has experienced considerable ecological decline following the catastrophic Baghjan oil blowout in 2020. Historically, this site, located just 9 kilometers from Tinsukia, has been a winter haven for migratory birds, attracting global bird watchers. However, the prolonged oil spill, which lasted nearly five months, has disrupted this crucial ecosystem, marking India’s longest-running oil disaster.
The blowout not only devastated local homes but also severely impacted the ecological health of the park, causing environmental damage and economic losses. Nirantar Gohain, an environmental activist, highlighted the decline in biodiversity and criticized the government’s insufficient conservation efforts. Despite its potential as a renowned birdwatching destination, the wetland now sees fewer migratory birds.
Gohain called for immediate government action to rejuvenate the wetland and enhance its tourism potential through eco-tourism initiatives like homestays and traditional boat rides, which could provide local employment and attract visitors. Local resident Ramesh Moran stressed the unique birdwatching opportunities the wetland offers, especially during winter, and urged for increased youth engagement in tourism ventures.
Ranjan Kumar Das, a retired vice principal and avid birdwatcher, noted that issues such as illegal sand mining have exacerbated the wetland’s decline over the years by siltation, threatening the delicate ecosystem. He had forecasted these impacts back in 2006. To restore ecological balance, urgent conservation measures are essential.
Promoting sustainable tourism and prioritizing environmental restoration can ensure that Maguri-Motapung beel remains a vibrant wildlife habitat and a cherished natural destination. Such initiatives could revitalize the local economy while preserving the region’s natural heritage for future generations.
