Outrage Over Union Budget: Atishi Slams Zero Fund Allocation for Delhi in Central Taxes
Delhi Minister Criticizes Centre’s Budget Allocation, Highlights Disparity in Tax Distribution
Delhi, July 23, 2024: Delhi Finance Minister Atishi, addressing the media at Delhi Sachivalaya, sharply criticized the Union Budget presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Atishi revealed that despite the national capital contributing a substantial ₹2.32 lakh crore in taxes to the BJP-led central government, it has not received any share in central taxes.
During the press conference, Atishi emphasized that Delhi, which she termed the "growth engine of the country," pays over ₹2 lakh crore in income tax and ₹25,000 crore as central GST. Despite this significant contribution, the city had only requested ₹20,000 crore, a mere 0.4 percent of the Union Budget. She expressed disappointment that the budget did not allocate any funds for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
"The BJP-ruled Centre has shown no achievements for Delhi over the past 11 years. The Union Budget is a clear indication of their negligence towards the capital’s needs. This budget serves the BJP’s interests rather than those of the people," Atishi asserted.
She further challenged the BJP to identify any significant contributions to Delhi in the last 11 budgets, underscoring a sense of continued disregard by the central government towards the city’s financial needs.
This critical stance by the AAP leader reflects ongoing tensions between the state administration and the central government, raising questions about equitable tax distribution and fiscal support for Delhi.
