Union Minister Highlights India’s Sporting Transition in Kohima Visit
Kohima, December 7: Dr. Mansukh L. Mandaviya, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports and Labour & Employment, emphasized India’s significant advancements in sports over the past decade during his recent visit to Kohima. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India has transformed from merely participating in global sports events to becoming strong contenders on international platforms such as the Olympics and Paralympics. This change, Mandaviya noted, stems from strategic planning, grassroots involvement, and a commitment to excellence.
Speaking at an event hosted by the Department of Labour & Employment, Youth Resources & Sports, and the Nagaland Olympic Association at Indira Gandhi Stadium, he highlighted the government’s proactive role in reshaping the sports ecosystem. Key initiatives such as the Khelo India Scheme, Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), and FIT India Movement were mentioned as efforts to foster a robust sports culture, support athletes, and enhance infrastructure through schemes like the National Sports Development Fund.
Mandaviya emphasized the importance of the Khelo India Rising Talent Identification Programme (KIRTI) in detecting grassroots talent, utilizing a transparent system powered by information technology and artificial intelligence. The programme aims to make sports accessible to every child nationwide while supporting gender equality initiatives like the ASMITA Khelo India Women’s League.
Furthermore, the National Sports Repository System (NSRS) was highlighted as an important digital tool connecting athletes, coaches, federations, and providing features for performance assessment and rewards distribution.
Recognizing the growing field of e-sports, Mandaviya stated the government’s support for this burgeoning industry, now seen as a serious competitive field. E-sports in India is fostering opportunities in game development, broadcasting, and event management, positioning the country to become a global digital sports hub. This drive reflects a vision for economic growth, youth empowerment, and fostering essential skills among young Indians.
