Powerful Civil Society Groups in Manipur Unite for Impactful Protest Against AFSPA on Human Rights Day
Five prominent civil society organizations in the Imphal Valley, led by the All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO), are organizing a mass rally on December 10, coinciding with International Human Rights Day. The rally’s aim is to demand the repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) and the return of peace in the state of Manipur. Pratap Leishangthem, the convenor, expressed that the gathering is a response against the reimposition of AFSPA and a call for normalcy restoration in Manipur. The AFSPA, a contentious law granting extensive powers to armed forces in disturbed areas, has been long criticized for alleged human rights abuses. In a related development, the Centre for Organisation Research and Education (CORE) has appealed to the United Nations Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances regarding the suspicious disappearance of Laishram Kamalbabu from an army camp. CORE demands an impartial investigation, stressing accountability and transparency, and seeks international attention for justice.
Adding to the state’s tensions, the Manipur government has extended its ban on mobile internet in nine conflict-affected districts until December 9 due to security concerns. This extension impacts districts like Imphal West and East, Kakching, and others, illustrating the fragile peace and its effect on communication.
