Rebels Close in on Homs: Dramatic Push Encircles Damascus, Challenging Syrian Government’s Hold
Amid escalating turmoil in Syria, insurgent forces reported entry into the suburbs of Homs on December 7, marking a significant advance against President Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Following a rapid week-long offensive, this development underscores increasing pressure on Assad, whose government struggles to maintain control in its 24th year.
Rebel commander Hassan Abdel Ghani, representing the Islamist-led coalition driving the offensive, announced the start of the “final phase” in encircling Damascus. He claimed their forces were closing in on all fronts surrounding the capital. In contrast, the Syrian defence ministry denied any rebel encroachment, asserting that military forces remain firmly positioned around Damascus.
Adding to the tense atmosphere, President Assad’s office refuted rumors of his leaving the country, labeling them as “false news,” and confirmed he continues his duties from Damascus.
The conflict intensified late Friday around northern Homs as government forces launched reinforcements and airstrikes to repel the insurgents. However, by Saturday, rebels reportedly breached defenses from the north and east.
The rebel advance is part of a larger deterioration of government control across Syria. Within a week, insurgents captured significant cities, including Aleppo, Hama, and Deir al-Zor. Southern provinces such as Quneitra, Deraa, and Suweida have also fallen, with insurgents now reportedly 30 kilometers from Damascus after swiftly seizing almost the entire southwest.
Adding to the unrest, local civilians demonstrated symbolic resistance. Protesters in a Damascus suburb toppled a statue of Assad’s father, with footage circulating widely.
Despite their swift gains, the rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, a former Al-Qaeda affiliate, affirmed its commitment to safeguarding government, international, and UN offices in Syria. As the rebels consolidate their positions, the potential for renewed turmoil in the capital signifies a pivotal moment in Syria’s longstanding civil war.
