Urgent Call to Action: Sikkim MP Champions Swift Revival of Flights at Pakyong Airport
Sikkim’s Lok Sabha MP, Indra Hang Subba, convened a follow-up meeting with Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapupu, on December 6 to address the pressing issue of resuming flight operations at Pakyong Airport. This airport, a vital conduit for Sikkim’s connectivity, tourism, and emergency healthcare services, has been closed for an extended period, adversely affecting the state.
During the discussions, Subba underscored the necessity of reinstating flight services by December 2024, in anticipation of the busy tourist season. To tackle operational hurdles like payload limitations and pilot training, he proposed a collaborative meeting with airline stakeholders, including SpiceJet and IndiGo, and the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
To enhance the reliability of flight operations, Subba suggested practical measures, such as designating Bagdogra Airport as an alternative landing site during unfavorable weather conditions and adopting the GAGAN navigation system. These initiatives aim to mitigate disruptions and ensure safer and more dependable services.
The Union Minister expressed his support and commitment to reinstating flight operations at this strategically important airport. “I remain hopeful that these efforts will ensure seamless connectivity and foster economic growth in Sikkim,” Subba stated after the meeting.
Pakyong Airport’s prolonged closure has significantly impacted Sikkim’s tourism industry and the livelihoods of its residents, making the resumption of flights a critical priority. The renewed initiative is expected to accelerate the restoration of flight services, ultimately revitalizing tourism and local economic activities in the state.
The collaborative approach seeks to overcome logistical and operational challenges, providing much-needed relief to Sikkim’s travel and tourism dynamics while advancing regional development goals.
