Exciting Breakthrough: New Navodaya Vidyalayas in Assam, Arunachal, and Manipur to Revolutionize Education!
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has sanctioned the creation of 28 new Navodaya Vidyalayas (NVs) to cover previously unserved districts in India. This move is designed to provide high-quality modern education to gifted rural students, with several new schools planned in the northeastern states.
Specifically, the Indian government will establish NVs in Arunachal Pradesh (Upper Subansiri, Kra Daadi, Lepa Rada, Lower Siang, Lohit, Pakke-Kessang, Shi-Yomi, and Siang), Assam (Sonitpur, Charaideo, Hojai, Majuli, West Karbi Anglong, and South Salmara-Mankachar), and Manipur (Thoubal, Kangpokpi, and Noney).
The project is projected to cost Rs 2,359.82 crore over a five-year period from 2024 to 2029, with a capital outlay of Rs 1,944.19 crore and operational costs of Rs 415.63 crore. Each school will accommodate 560 students, offering a fully residential co-educational environment, thereby benefiting a total of 15,680 students across all 28 schools.
Additionally, the project will create 1,316 permanent jobs, as each Navodaya Vidyalaya will require 47 staff members. The construction of these facilities will also generate employment opportunities for both skilled and unskilled workers, while the residential aspect will stimulate local economies by engaging vendors and service providers in areas such as food, furniture, teaching materials, and maintenance.
Admission to these schools will be merit-based, through a national selection test, ensuring that talented students from various socio-economic backgrounds have access. Notably, 42% of current NV students are girls, with significant representation from Scheduled Castes (24%), Scheduled Tribes (20%), and Other Backward Classes (39%).
Aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, these NVs will function as PM SHRI Schools, serving as exemplary models for realizing NEP’s vision. The expansion underscores the government’s ongoing commitment to delivering inclusive, quality education in rural India, nurturing future leaders from underrepresented communities.
