Groundbreaking: Tribunal’s Bold Ban on Former PM’s Speeches in Bangladesh Under Sheikh Hasina’s Leadership
Dhaka, Dec 5: In a significant development, Bangladesh’s domestic war crimes tribunal has ordered the immediate removal of recent statements by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from all social media platforms, labeling them as “hate speech.” The directive aims to prevent interference in an ongoing investigation by the interim government, following Hasina’s remarks criticizing the interim government’s Chief Advisor, Muhammad Yunus.
Speaking virtually at an Awami League event in New York, Hasina accused Yunus of orchestrating attacks on Hindu temples and other minority religious sites in Bangladesh. She alleged that Yunus, alongside his associates, is responsible for mass killings, a claim that quickly gained traction online. In response, Prosecutor Abdullah Al Noman of the International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh (ICT-BD) filed a petition to ban Hasina’s speeches, highlighting potential impacts on current investigations.
The tribunal, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza, instructed the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to eliminate all instances of Hasina’s controversial speeches from social media, involving platforms like Facebook, X, and YouTube. The tribunal itself was instituted under Hasina’s leadership to prosecute crimes related to the 1971 Liberation War.
Amidst these developments, Hasina denounced the interim government following the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, a spokesperson linked to Iskcon Bangladesh. She urged his immediate release, condemning the alleged persecution of minority communities since her resignation on August 5. Reports of violence and vandalism against religious sites, including the burning of a temple in Chittagong, have heightened tensions.
Hasina also expressed concern over the harassment and arrests of Awami League members, urging the protection of religious freedom and community safety in Bangladesh. These unfolding events continue to attract significant attention nationally and internationally.
