Unlock Vitality: Discover How Eating 5 Mushrooms Daily Can Combat Heart Disease and Cancer
New Delhi, December 5 (IANS) — Mushrooms, low in calories yet packed with essential vitamins and minerals, offer significant health benefits. Recent research highlights their potential in combating diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and dementia, thanks to antioxidants ergothioneine and glutathione. These antioxidants play a crucial role in neutralizing harmful free radicals linked to severe illnesses. According to Robert Beelman, director at the Penn State Centre for Plant and Mushroom Products for Health, mushrooms are the highest dietary source of these powerful antioxidants.
With nearly 14,000 mushroom varieties worldwide, only a fraction are edible, as some possess toxic properties with names like Deadly Dapperling and Death Cap. Others, due to their psychedelic effects, are deemed illegal in many countries. Despite this, several edible types, including common varieties like button mushrooms and oyster mushrooms, are nutrient-dense options. The Coimbatore-based Mushroom Foundation of India notes that these fungi are rich in proteins, outperforming cereals, fruits, and vegetables, and maintain their protein content even after cooking. Their low caloric value, high protein and fiber content, and favorable potassium-to-sodium (K:Na) ratio make them ideal for individuals with diabetes and hypertension.
Button mushrooms, the world’s most popular variety, are a good source of essential nutrients including B vitamins, vitamin D, selenium, copper, and potassium. Oyster mushrooms offer a tender flesh and velvety texture, with a mere 28 calories per cup, and are high in nutrients like niacin, folic acid, vitamins C and B12, and ergothioneine. India also hosts other beneficial varieties such as shiitake, cordyceps, lion’s mane, reishi, turkey tail, and chaga mushrooms, renowned for their distinct health advantages.
Incorporating a small amount — just five daily — of these nutritious mushrooms can provide substantial health benefits, strengthening the fight against major diseases while adding flavor and variety to your diet.
