Outrage Ensues: Gaurav Gogoi’s Bold Adjournment Motion Against Police Blocking Rahul Gandhi’s Crucial Sambhal Visit
On December 5, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi submitted an adjournment motion notice in the Lok Sabha, criticizing the government for preventing Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition, from visiting the violence-stricken area of Sambhal. Gandhi, accompanied by Congress figures such as Priyanka Gandhi, was halted by police at the Ghazipur border in Ghaziabad while attempting to assess the situation.
Gogoi condemned the government’s actions as “undemocratic” and contrary to parliamentary principles. He argued that by obstructing Gandhi’s visit to Sambhal, the government was effectively dismissing the opposition’s role in holding it accountable. Highlighting the intended purpose of the visit—promoting peace and harmony—Gogoi emphasized that denying access undermines transparency and accountability within the democratic framework.
Gogoi further underscored the importance of the Leader of the Opposition’s role, stating, “As a representative of the people, it is the LoP’s responsibility to address public concerns. Blocking access to crucial sites stifles dissent and weakens democratic oversight.”
Rahul Gandhi, in response to the incident, criticized the police’s intervention, stating, “We are trying to go to Sambhal, but the police are refusing to allow us. As Leader of the Opposition, it is my right to visit. This denial reflects the state of ‘New India,’ where the Constitution and Ambedkar’s vision are undermined. We will continue to fight.”
The unrest in Sambhal began on November 24 due to an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) examination of a Mughal-era mosque. The survey was prompted by a court petition claiming the mosque was constructed on the site of a Harihar temple. The clashes that ensued during the examination resulted in four fatalities and multiple injuries among both police and local residents.
This incident highlights the ongoing tension between the government and opposition regarding access to and accountability for sensitive areas in India.
