Transformative Milestone: Excitement Soars as Foundation Laid for City Ropeway Project
Shillong, Dec 4: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma marked a significant milestone for Meghalaya’s tourism sector by unveiling the foundation stone for the Shillong Ropeway Project at Shillong Peak viewpoint on Wednesday. The original foundation stone was laid by India’s President, Droupadi Murmu, on January 16. The event was attended by Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh and other dignitaries.
During the ceremony, the chief minister and tourism minister awarded the letter of acceptance to KEC International Limited and Tantia Construction Limited, the joint venture firms tasked with the project’s construction. The passenger ropeway, Meghalaya’s first, is estimated at Rs 175 crore and will be executed in collaboration with POMA, a French company responsible for supplying the necessary equipment.
This project is part of a larger strategy by the state government to enhance tourist infrastructure and attractions. Additionally, Sangma presented a Rs 1.5 crore cheque to Glanding Lyngdoh, general secretary of Riat Laban Dorbar Pyllun, as the second installment of the land compensation amounting to a total of Rs 3 crore.
Chief Minister Sangma acknowledged the effort and collaboration of all stakeholders involved, highlighting the challenges encountered, such as land acquisition and obtaining necessary permissions. He also emphasized the creation of the Meghalaya Ropeway Development Authority to uphold safety standards and licensing.
The ropeway will traverse several areas, including Laban, Madan Laban, Upper Lumparing, Lower Lumparing, Lumshatsngi, Oxford Hills, and Rngi Shillong. Sangma stressed the importance of community partnership in such projects, asserting that joint efforts would yield beneficial revenue for the Dorbar and other stakeholders.
Furthermore, he expressed appreciation for the support from the armed forces, especially the Indian Air Force, in facilitating the project’s initiation. The Shillong Ropeway Project stands as a testament to state collaboration and is expected to significantly boost Meghalaya’s tourism landscape.
