Urgent Investigation: Manipur Women’s Commission’s Crusade for Justice in Jiribam’s Hostage Tragedy – Heartfelt Review of Relief Camp Conditions
In response to the harrowing murder of three women and three children, the Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) dispatched a fact-finding team to Jiribam on November 28, 2024. The team, led by the MSCW Chairperson and accompanied by two members, sought to investigate and address the situation comprehensively.
The following day, the MSCW team orchestrated a pivotal meeting chaired by the Deputy Commissioner of Jiribam. Here, representatives from critical departments such as Police, Social Welfare, and Medical convened to tackle urgent issues impacting the relief camps in the area. The discussions highlighted both the immediate obstacles and the long-term challenges in managing and improving the welfare of camp residents.
Further discussions were held with the Special Superintendent of Police and Nodal Officers responsible for relief camp oversight. These talks focused on identifying administrative hurdles and formulating strategies to enhance living conditions for those housed in camps.
Additionally, the MSCW team visited the One Stop Center in Jiribam district to engage with its staff, gaining insights into their operational challenges. In a compassionate move, the delegation also met with the grieving families of the victims, providing them a platform to express their grievances and concerns.
This comprehensive investigation underscores the MSCW’s commitment to seeking justice and improving conditions for the affected communities in Jiribam. Meanwhile, the broader legal context is underscored by the Manipur High Court’s establishment of a four-member committee to probe another distinct case—a man’s disappearance—reflecting ongoing attempts to address and resolve pressing societal issues in the region.
