Game-Changing Railways (Amendment) Bill, 2024: Lok Sabha’s Bold Move for a Transformative Future
The Lok Sabha has initiated the consideration and potential passage of the Railways (Amendment) Bill, 2024. The Bill, presented by Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, is designed to enhance the efficiency of the Indian Railways. Vaishnaw highlighted the transformative progress achieved in the sector over the past decade under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, citing a significant increase in the Railways’ budget from approximately 29,000 crore rupees to 2.52 lakh crore rupees. He also noted that 44,000 kilometers of the railway network have been electrified during this period.
In the ensuing discussion, Congress’s Manoj Kumar expressed concerns regarding the Bill’s potential to lead toward the privatization of Indian Railways. He also voiced worries about the high ticket fares on Vande Bharat trains.
BJP’s Ravi Kishan countered by emphasizing the accomplishments of the Modi government, stating that the once corruption-tainted image of the Railways has undergone substantial reform since 2014. Neeraj Maurya from the Samajwadi Party also contributed to the debate as discussions continue in the House.
The Bill reflects the government’s commitment to modernizing the Railways infrastructure and improving service delivery. However, it has sparked a debate on the balance between modernization and privatization, indicating the complexities involved in reforming such a vast and critical sector. The ongoing discussion in the Lok Sabha reflects a range of perspectives on the future trajectory of India’s Railways, highlighting both achievements and concerns surrounding this key component of national infrastructure.
