Empowering Unity: Transformative Celebration of International Day of Persons with Disabilities in Shillong
Shillong, Dec 3: Meghalaya celebrated the International Day of Persons with Disabilities at the U Soso Tham Auditorium, focusing on “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.” The event, titled EmpowerFest 2.0, gathered stakeholders from across the state, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity.
A significant highlight of the event was the distribution of adaptive chairs tailored for children with cerebral palsy, underscoring the necessity for accessibility and comfort for differently-abled individuals. Governor C.H. Vijayashankar, alongside Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh, presented these specially designed chairs. This adaptive seating initiative was a collaborative effort involving the Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, the Meghalaya Skill Development Society, and the State Resource Centre on Disability Affairs. Notably, the chairs were crafted by skilled carpenters with disabilities from across the state, each chair customized to accommodate the specific needs of the children.
Additionally, the event marked the launch of Meghalaya Sign-Lex, a new platform designed to bridge communication gaps within the hearing and speech-impaired community. This innovative initiative aims to enhance communication accessibility within the state.
In a captivating musical performance, Eastern Brook, a band composed entirely of members with disabilities, performed the newly launched Meghalaya Disability Anthem. Their performance was met with appreciation from the audience, and Governor Vijayashankar personally interacted with the band members, acknowledging their talent and contribution to the event.
Overall, EmpowerFest 2.0 not only highlighted the essential leadership and inclusivity of persons with disabilities but also set a precedent for future initiatives aimed at creating a more accessible and sustainable society for all individuals in Meghalaya.
