Urgent Alert: Rescue Squads Mobilized as Kozhikode Faces Severe Weather Threat
Country boats were anchored at Vellayil harbour in Kozhikode on December 2 due to rough weather warnings from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), as reported by K. Ragesh. Disaster management squads remained on high alert in Kozhikode district on Monday, December 2, following the IMD’s alerts. With a red alert issued, community rescue squads in landslide-prone areas were prepared under the instructions of the Revenue Department. Despite heavy rains hitting both urban and rural areas on Monday evening, no natural disaster incidents were reported to the district control room. Schools ran as usual, although waterlogging on the Kozhikode bypass road inconvenienced motorists. Due to Cyclone Fengal over northern Tamil Nadu, country boat operators were advised against fishing. Some ventured out in the morning but returned quickly due to poor weather. An IMD update on Monday directed fishers to halt activities along the Kerala coast on Tuesday, December 3. “Village officers have been instructed to monitor rural areas, and all control rooms are operational for public emergencies,” stated a Revenue Department official from Koyilandy taluk. He noted that by late evening, no requests for relief camps had been made. Published on December 2, 2024, at 11:25 PM IST.
