Farmers reignited their protest with a march towards Delhi on Monday, breaking through security barricades to demand government action on their grievances. In response, authorities instituted a robust security operation featuring a three-tier system, with the deployment of approximately 5,000 police officers and 1,000 PSC personnel across key areas to maintain order. Emergency units, including water cannons and fire squads, were on standby, while traffic management teams faced significant challenges as vehicles encountered lengthy delays entering and exiting Delhi due to roadblocks and checks.
Protesters have maintained a presence at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points since mid-February when their initial march was halted by security forces. Despite negotiations with the government soon after, no resolution was achieved. With frustrations mounting, farmers declared their intent to escalate the protest by beginning a fast-unto-death on November 26. A new wave of protest marching kicked off in phases along the Ambala-New Delhi highway, originating from Shambhu.
This renewed push towards the capital saw the first group setting off from Noida on December 2. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court intervened, urging protest leaders, including Jagjit Singh Dallewal—who is currently fasting at the Khanauri border—to ensure their demonstrations do not impede highways, thereby minimizing public inconvenience.
The protest also significantly impacted the Delhi-Noida border, causing heavy traffic congestion as police increased security measures and checks. The use of drones for surveillance has been reported as part of the efforts to monitor and manage the protest activities effectively. While tensions remain high, officials continue to balance maintaining public order and addressing the farmers’ demands, amidst the impact of the protest on daily commuters.
