Uncover the Shocking Truth: Gladiator 2 Cinematographer Exposes the Decline in Ridley Scott’s Film Quality
Cinematographer John Mathieson, after a collaboration spanning 24 years, recently expressed criticism toward legendary filmmaker Ridley Scott, describing him as “impatient” and his approach to storytelling as “lazy” during an interview on The DocFix Documentary Storytelling Podcast. Mathieson, who worked on “Gladiator II,” highlighted issues with Scott’s filming techniques, particularly his reliance on computer-generated imagery to rectify on-set oversights—such as visible cameras or microphones—instead of avoiding them during filming.
He elaborated on Scott’s fondness for using multiple cameras simultaneously, which, he argued, compromises the depth and lighting that single-camera setups can achieve. “It’s a bit rush, rush, rush,” Mathieson noted, explaining that while this method captures numerous performances, it results in a lack of meticulous care. Despite his reservations, Mathieson conceded that Scott’s filmography commands a loyal audience, allowing him the creative freedom to pursue his preferred style.
The highly anticipated “Gladiator II,” featuring an impressive ensemble including Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Lior Raz, Derek Jacobi, Connie Nielsen, and Denzel Washington, hit theaters on November 15. The film serves as a sequel to the Oscar-winning original, with Derek Jacobi and Connie Nielsen reprising their roles. Paul Mescal takes on the role of Lucius, replacing Spencer Treat Clark, as he ventures into gladiatorial combat after Maximus’s son is forced from his home by Roman forces.
Ridley Scott, known for his prolific output, has released four films in the past three years, including “The Last Duel,” “House of Gucci,” “Napoleon,” and “Gladiator II.” He continues to develop an array of projects, such as “The Dog Stars,” with Paul Mescal, and even a potential “Gladiator III,” demonstrating his relentless dedication to filmmaking despite differing opinions on his methodology.
