Court Demands Report on Street Dog Management in Shillong
Guwahati: The Meghalaya High Court has tasked the Shillong Municipal Board with presenting a comprehensive report by February 5, 2025, on measures implemented to control the street dog population in Shillong. This directive emerged from a hearing concerning a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on the subject, overseen by Chief Justice Indra Prasanna Mukerji and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh.
Efforts made by the Shillong Municipal Board include the vaccination and sterilization of street dogs to curb rabies and manage their numbers. Despite these measures, the board concedes the absence of a dedicated shelter for these animals. The High Court emphasized the necessity for the Municipal Board to establish such a facility, with support from the state government, to ensure proper care and management.
The court has instructed the Municipal Board to take immediate steps towards acquiring a shelter and outline these efforts in their forthcoming report. The case is scheduled for a follow-up hearing on February 10, 2025.
