Nagaland Prepares for Grand 25th Hornbill Festival at Kisama
Kohima, November 29 — As Nagaland gears up for the 25th Hornbill Festival, scheduled to commence on December 1 at the Naga Heritage Village in Kisama, anticipation is heightened for what is often heralded as the ‘Festival of Festivals.’ Announcing the preparations, Tourism Minister Temjen Imna Along emphasized the event’s role in highlighting Naga heritage and fostering international cooperation in culture, business, and investment.
The festivities, extended over 10 days, will not be confined to Kisama alone. Various districts, including Dimapur and Zunheboto, will also partake. This year, the festival is proud to announce collaborations with four country partners—United States, United Kingdom (Wales), Japan, and Peru—and two Indian state partners, Sikkim and Telangana.
Significant investments are focused on infrastructure, with Rs.100 crore allocated for upgrades at the Kisama venue, and the annual budget for the festival raised to Rs. 6.5 crore. Notably, new facilities such as an amphitheater and galleries have been expediently constructed, incorporating safety measures assessed by IIT experts. This enhanced infrastructure promises year-round utility for concerts and expos.
Expanding beyond cultural display, the festival will host business roundtables, literature events, and film screenings. Advisor to the Chief Minister, Abu Metha, highlighted these initiatives as pivotal to attracting trade and investment opportunities, drawing attention to previous successful collaborations, like scholarships and CSR projects with countries such as Germany and Japan.
The Hornbill Festival is also an economic catalyst, reportedly generating an estimated Rs. 200 crore and creating 8,500 jobs in past editions. Metha stressed this impact, urging collective participation to continue showcasing Naga culture and hospitality to the world.
Sustainability efforts are evident, with plans to minimize plastic use and implement waste management systems, aiming for an eco-friendly festival. A pre-Christmas prayer service planned for December 8 underscores the event’s spiritual aspect, fostering unity among attendees.
As challenges are acknowledged, community cooperation is encouraged to ensure a memorable experience for the global audience.
