Empower Our Children: Join the Heartfelt Campaign for a Child Marriage FREE Bharat in Chennai
The Indian Community Welfare Organisation (ICWO), along with Just Rights for Children, launched the ‘Child Marriage FREE Bharat’ campaign in Chennai. The event was inaugurated by Rajkumar Muthukrishnan, chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee, Chennai South, who unveiled the campaign banner. Natharsha Malim. H, State coordinator of the Association for Voluntary Action (AVA), highlighted concerns regarding the low number of FIRs registered compared to child marriages reported, indicating gaps in enforcement. A.Bakthavatchalam, a committee member, released an awareness e-poster. Approximately 250 participants joined an awareness program and candlelight vigil, pledging to combat child marriage. A.J.Hariharan, secretary of ICWO, emphasized that child marriage is a violation that undermines girls’ rights and development. The coalition urged the government and political parties to enhance educational opportunities by extending free education to age 18. The initiative aims to lower child marriage rates from 23.3% to 10% by 2025 and eliminate it by 2030.
