Exciting Unveiling: Meghalaya CM’s Inspiring Inauguration of Umtrew’s First-Ever State Zoo Phase

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurated the first phase of the Meghalaya Biological Park, also known as the Meghalaya State Zoo, in Umtrew, Ri Bhoi District, on November 27. The ambitious project had its inception 24 years ago in 2001 and marks a significant step forward for the region.

During the ceremony, Sangma reiterated the government’s dedication to the state’s development, acknowledging ongoing work on essential facilities such as ticketing counters, cafeterias, souvenir shops, and animal enclosures. The park aims to be more than just a recreational area; it is envisioned as an educational platform to inspire empathy and responsibility among youth towards nature and wildlife.

The chief minister emphasized the park’s role in ecological restoration, providing refuge for rescued animals or those unable to return to the wild. Highlighting conservation efforts, Sangma noted the importance of data collection and research on local flora and fauna, leveraging technology for efficient environmental protection.

Animals from the Lady Hydari Park in Shillong have been relocated to new enclosures at the Umtrew facility, reflecting the government’s commitment to enhancing wildlife care. Although the project began in 2001 with the acquisition of a 72-hectare site, it faced delays due to mismanagement by the State Forest and Environment Department despite grants received in 2005. However, the project gained momentum in 2019 with Sangma laying the foundation stone, and estimated costs are around Rs 35 crore.

This development not only boosts tourism but also fosters a sense of environmental stewardship, marking a milestone in Meghalaya’s commitment to ecological conservation and sustainable progress.
