Urgent: Congress MP Hibi Eden Demands Crucial Lok Sabha Debate on Manipur’s Alarming Crisis
On November 27, Member of Parliament Hibi Eden spotlighted the escalating crisis in Manipur by proposing an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha, urging urgent discussion and government intervention. His motion underscored an alarming deterioration of law and order, pointing to administrative failures amid ongoing violence in the state.
Eden’s notice to the Lok Sabha Secretary-General detailed the grave consequences of the unrest: mass displacement, destruction of infrastructure, and allegations of biased governmental response. He criticized the state’s inadequate handling of armed groups and the dissemination of inflammatory materials, which have intensified communal distrust.
He further highlighted the national outcry over incidents of sexual violence, most notably involving the public parade of women, which drew Supreme Court intervention. The apex court has called for in-depth investigations and judicial oversight to address these issues. Moreover, the humanitarian crisis has been exacerbated, with displaced residents facing severe shortages in shelter and food.
Eden’s notice advocated for immediate attention from Parliament to address Manipur’s deteriorating situation, hold the state administration accountable, and implement rapid solutions to restore peace and justice. He warned that the violence threatens not just the state’s social fabric but also the core democratic values of India.
In response to the crisis, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has initiated probes, registering three new cases in regions including Jiribam. The NIA’s involvement, starting November 13, 2024, follows directives from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs due to the severity and suspected conspiracy linked to the violence.
Eden’s plea for action calls on the government and lawmakers to take decisive steps to heal the state, underscoring the urgency to safeguard India’s democratic integrity amidst this turmoil.
