Meghalaya Cabinet Minister Urges for Crucial Consultation from Centre on Key NEHU Appointments: A Call for Collaboration and Respect
Unresolved issues at Meghalaya’s North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) have prompted Cabinet Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh to call for greater collaboration between the Central and state governments on critical appointments, such as the Vice-Chancellor’s position. On November 26, Lyngdoh underscored the necessity for the Centre to consult with the state to ensure an appropriate academic environment at the university.
This appeal comes in the wake of intensified investigations by a two-member inquiry committee from the Ministry of Education, looking into alleged administrative failures at NEHU. The committee has been conducting extensive consultations with stakeholders to understand the complexities involved.
Lyngdoh expressed optimism that the Central committee will propose actionable solutions to the ongoing issues, urging stakeholders to push for Meghalaya’s inclusion in decision-making regarding key appointments. She expressed solidarity with the university’s students, acknowledging the persistent imbalance they face.
Further, Lyngdoh advocated for the involvement of local communities and qualified individuals in NEHU’s decision-making processes. She argued that although NEHU is a central university, the state government should still have a significant voice in decisions impacting Meghalaya, aiming to rectify the alleged discrepancies and ensure the institution’s development aligns with the state’s interests.
Adding to the momentum, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan are actively engaged in the discussions, with increased pressure on the Government of India to take decisive action. The goal is to resolve the prevailing issues and allow the university to resume normal operations.
Through this concerted effort, Lyngdoh and other state leaders seek to strengthen Meghalaya’s influence in the management of NEHU, ensuring that its appointments and policies reflect the needs and aspirations of the local community while upholding the university’s academic standards.
