Empowered AITUC Stages Passionate Protest in Guwahati: Exposing Government’s ‘Anti-Labour’ and ‘Anti-Farmer’ Policies
In a significant display of dissent against government policies, the Centre of India Trade Unions (CITU) orchestrated nationwide protests, condemning what they perceive as anti-farmer and anti-labour laws. In Guwahati, the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) spearheaded a spirited demonstration against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), highlighting the hardships faced by agricultural and tea garden workers in Assam.
Protesters voiced their discontent over the dire conditions of the 23 lakh agricultural labourers and the meagre daily earnings of the 12 lakh tea garden workers and 2 lakh Anganwadi workers in the state. One demonstrator questioned the government’s commitment to addressing these issues, lamenting the stark disparity between wages and the cost of living.
The protesters criticized the government for its perceived neglect of the working class, pointing to stagnant wages and increasing inequality. They accused the administration of prioritizing the interests of large businesses over workers’, claiming that the government has devolved into a “broker for Adani and Ambani” by selling Assam’s resources to wealthy businessmen.
Further grievances included the mounting national debt and the inadequate provision of healthcare and educational facilities, with protesters demanding immediate policy changes. A clear warning was issued that should these concerns remain unaddressed, the government could face electoral repercussions in 2026.
The demonstrations underscore rising discontent among Assam’s working-class population, resolute in their demand for improved conditions and equitable treatment under the government’s policies. As the movement gains momentum, it reflects the workers’ determination to challenge policies they perceive as detrimental, advocating for a more inclusive approach to development that safeguards the rights and resources of Assam’s people.
