On Constitution Day, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna announced that the Supreme Court will not revert to the old system of managing adjournments via letter circulation. The prior system saw an overwhelming 1,000 adjournment requests daily, and despite requests from the bar, a return to this method would be inefficient, as current monthly requests have dropped to around 150.
Under the revamped process initiated last February, adjournments are confined to specific cases and limited to a single circulation, significantly reducing requests from 10,000 every three months to 1,400 over 11 months. CJI Khanna stressed that going back would be unproductive, urging the legal community to embrace the new system and propose constructive improvements.
Additionally, CJI Khanna has agreed to the legal community’s demand for physical cause lists. Infrastructure upgrades are also underway, including new conference rooms, more cabins for oath commissioners, enhanced photocopy facilities, and improved Wi-Fi access, particularly in the ladies’ bar room.
