Delhi Assembly Poll Shocker: AAP Promises Pension Hope for 80,000 Seniors; BJP Vows Universal Coverage for Elderly Joy
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal announced the Delhi government’s initiative to expand the old-age pension scheme to cover an additional 80,000 beneficiaries, bringing the total to 5.30 lakh senior citizens. The portal for applications was reopened recently, and 10,000 new applications have already been submitted. Kejriwal emphasized that the scheme’s momentum symbolizes that a single-party governance can perform effectively, despite the setbacks experienced after his arrest earlier this year. Beneficiaries aged 60-69 will receive ₹2,000 monthly, while those aged 70 and above will continue to get ₹2,500, with an extra ₹500 for individuals from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and minority communities. In contrast, Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva pledged full pension coverage for all senior citizens if his party wins the upcoming Assembly election, claiming that BJP’s intervention forced the scheme’s expansion.
