Hyderabad, Nov 25: The Andhra Pradesh Police made a visit to the residence of famed filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma in Hyderabad on Monday, after he failed to present himself for questioning in a case that has gripped the media’s attention. Varma is under scrutiny for allegedly posting derogatory comments about Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and his family members on social media, which has stirred up a significant controversy given the profiles involved.
The drama unfolded as the Ongole Rural Police arrived at the home of the director, known for his penchant for controversy, only to discover he was not present. Reports suggest he had left for Coimbatore, skirting a scheduled meeting with the police that day. RGV, as he is commonly called, had initially requested additional time before facing police interrogation, setting Monday as the day he would comply—a promise unkept.
The allegations escalated last week when a complaint was filed by local Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader Ramalingam. The complaint accuses Varma of besmirching the reputation of not just CM Naidu but also Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, Information and Technology Minister Nara Lokesh, and more. It claims RGV’s comments during the promotion of his film ‘Vyuham’ were offensive and targeted.
A case was subsequently registered under Section 336 (4) and 353 (2) of the BNS Act, in addition to Section 67 of the IT Act. The Maddipadu police station served notice to the filmmaker, demanding his presence for investigation—a notice he had not honored. Varma sought relief from the Andhra Pradesh High Court, but the court denied interim relief and instructed that a bail petition should be filed, leaving the filmmaker facing imminent arrest if he doesn’t comply.
In this unfolding drama, RGV’s maneuvering remains closely watched, as legal obligations weigh against his artistic pursuits and public commentary.
