India & Italy Forge Powerful Strategic Partnership: Jaishankar Celebrates Shared Vision for a United Future
India considers Italy a significant partner in Europe and an influential ally in the Mediterranean, as stated by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar during the inauguration of the new Indian Embassy Chancery in Rome. He emphasized the growing depth of bilateral relations, marked by frequent interactions among leaders and officials, indicating a strong partnership. Jaishankar highlighted the shared global and regional perspectives between India and Italy, acknowledging Italy’s vital role in India’s engagement with Europe.
The two countries recently introduced a five-year strategic action plan (2025-29), aiming to enhance cooperation in sectors like defense, clean energy, trade, and connectivity. This initiative followed discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni during the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
Jaishankar also reflected on the historical and cultural ties between India and Italy, noting that Italy has been central to India’s interactions with Europe historically. He praised the Indian diaspora in Italy for their significant contributions across various sectors, playing a crucial role in reinforcing these bilateral ties.
Additionally, he mentioned the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) as a transformative project to boost connectivity between Europe and Asia, an agreement secured during India’s G20 presidency.
During his three-day visit to Italy, Jaishankar will participate in the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Outreach session in Fiuggi, where India is a guest country. He will also engage in bilateral talks with Italian and other international counterparts and attend the 10th edition of the MED Mediterranean Dialogue in Rome.
This visit and the agreements underscore the strengthening India-Italy relationship, poised for enhanced cooperation on several fronts in the near future.
