Miracle Transformation: Inspiring Youths in Raha Revitalize Cultural Heritage and Turn Stink into Fragrance | Guwahati News
In Guwahati, Nirupam Kalita, a 26-year-old architect and artist from Raha, Nagaon, embarked on a transformative community project three years ago that began as a simple plan to clean his town. This initiative evolved into a cultural preservation mission, focusing on safeguarding the area’s traditional heritage. Since 2022, a dedicated group of over 200 young people, aged between four and thirty, have been actively involved in organizing the Raas Mahatsov, a revered cultural festival, along with other literary and cultural events near the Raha market.
The journey was challenging; the group first had to tackle a 40-year-old landfill that had turned the location into an unsightly and foul-smelling dump. Through their efforts, the area was revitalized and rebranded as ‘Xubaax,’ meaning ‘fragrance’ in Assamese, reflecting its new identity as a hub for cultural activities. Kalita explained that this transformation not only addressed the environmental blight but also provided a space for local youth to showcase their talents and enhance their intellectual pursuits.
A significant part of their mission was to revive the traditional Raas celebration, which was losing its cultural significance in the area. By pooling knowledge and skills from diverse community members, the group aimed to restore the authentic essence of this art form. This year, preparations for the Raas performance on November 30th are in full swing, with young performers dedicating one and a half months to relentless practice for a six-hour rendition of Lord Krishna’s Raas-Leela. The event’s organization, including set design and music, has been entrusted to the female members of the group, showcasing the collaborative spirit and leadership within the community.
