Chennai Metro Rail’s Tunnel Boring Triumph: Ayanavaram to Perambur Breakthrough Imminent!
Chennai Metro Rail’s tunnel boring machine (TBM) ‘Kalvarayan’ is set to achieve a breakthrough at Perambur by the end of January, advancing the ₹63,846-crore Phase II project. This phase will connect Ayanavaram and Perambur with underground metro stations. These areas are part of the 45.4 km corridor 3, stretching from Madhavaram in the north to SIPCOT in the south, marking the longest route in the network. The ‘Kalvarayan’ TBM has already covered 866 meters and waits outside Perambur station for its breakthrough, delayed by complex construction challenges and late completion of the diaphragm wall and base slab. The machine initially began its journey from Ayanavaram in August last year but has faced setbacks similar to other TBMs in Chennai, primarily due to tendering issues delaying station construction. Once ‘Kalvarayan’ completes its mission, the second TBM, ‘Melagiri,’ will initiate the second tunnel under suburban railway tracks, adhering to Southern Railways’ guidelines. The tunneling, expected to last a week, will be closely monitored, ensuring precision and safety.
