Historic Swivel Cannons Unearthed in Dhubri: A Glimpse into Medieval Warfare

In a remarkable archaeological discovery, three swivel cannons dating back to the 16th to 18th centuries have been unearthed in Dhubri, Assam. The cannons were found on Sahidul Haque’s farmland in Barundanga village, previously a bamboo plantation. The finding has excited the local community, offering a tangible link to the region’s medieval past.

Mrinmoy Das, a distinguished Museologist from Assam, provided insights into the cannons’ construction and historical use. Forged from iron rings welded together, these cannons were versatile tools of war and communication in medieval India. The swivel cannons, mounted on warships and ground positions, served both offensive and signaling purposes. Smaller versions were easily transportable and used to warn of imminent danger or convey messages.

During the Ahom dynasty, large cannons were termed ‘bortops,’ while smaller ones were called ‘hilois.’ The Ahom war boats, equipped with these swivel cannons, were known as ‘Hiloi Chara Nao.’ The expertise required to operate these weapons involved orienting them via a swivel and trunnion base, allowing for nimble maneuvering.

The exact age of these cannons can be verified only through carbon dating. However, their location and historical context suggest a late medieval origin. The cannons exhibit significant corrosion, necessitating immediate conservation efforts for their preservation, as emphasized by Das.

Under The Antiquities and Art Treasures Act of 1972, the Directorate of Museums, ITFC department, Government of Assam, is responsible for these cultural artifacts. For now, the recovered swivel cannons and their projectiles are safeguarded by the Dhubri police administration.

This discovery not only enriches the historical narrative of Dhubri but also underscores the technological and strategic ingenuity of the region’s medieval inhabitants.
