Fearlessly Tackling Corruption: Bengal CM’s Bold CID Overhaul to Restore Trust
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has accused a segment of the state police of corruption, tarnishing her government’s reputation. In response, she announced plans to comprehensively overhaul the CID, aiming for a shake-up that reinforces integrity within the force. After a high-level meeting, she insisted that strict action will be taken against corrupt practices, regardless of political affiliation. She highlighted issues involving certain officers allegedly accepting bribes to facilitate illegal activities in sectors like sand, coal, cement, and stone. Banerjee also addressed inaction within the Land Department concerning tender processes for these resources.
At a Nabanna press conference, the CM urged law enforcement to act without bias, emphasizing that anyone involved in corruption, including political figures, should face consequences. She further announced plans to bolster the Special Task Force (STF) and the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB).
Her remarks followed recent police transfers in Kolkata and Howrah, facing opposition criticism, and were influenced by a murder attempt on a TMC councillor. Banerjee also stressed the responsibility of BSF and RPF for border security and the need for central intervention to curb smuggling activities.
The CM ordered enhanced state police vigilance, calling for extensive checking, particularly in border areas, and highlighted concerns about illegal arms factories in Bihar and counterfeit currency entering from neighboring countries.
Additionally, the CM expressed concern over escalating potato and onion prices within West Bengal, blaming exports for local scarcity. She insisted that local needs should be prioritized before sending produce elsewhere.
Banerjee assured financial support, announcing that funds for schemes like Krishak Bandhu would be disbursed in December, with Rs 2,900 crore allocated to benefit over 1.07 crore farmers for the upcoming Rabi season. She also mentioned the imminent distribution of Banglar Bari scheme benefits.
