Delta CEO Hails Trump’s Regulation Reform as a Game-Changing Breath of Fresh Air
Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian expressed optimism about the Trump administration’s potential approach to regulation, describing it as a “breath of fresh air.” Speaking before Delta’s investor day, Bastian highlighted President-elect Trump’s campaign promise to reassess regulation and bureaucracy. The current U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), under Secretary Pete Buttigieg, has implemented consumer protection rules that have sparked criticism from the airline industry, such as mandating automatic cash refunds for canceled flights. Bastian criticized this as regulatory “overreach.”
The DOT is also investigating airline loyalty programs and Delta’s response to its major July outage, which led to numerous flight cancellations. Buttigieg defended this investigation at a press conference, emphasizing the agency’s duty to address travel complaints. He suggested airlines should focus on passenger care rather than regulatory grievances.
Delta announced promising future sales and profit growth, boosted by strong consumer demand. Meanwhile, Trump has chosen Sean Duffy, a former U.S. congressman, to head the DOT, though no comment has been forthcoming. Buttigieg noted that consumer protections for air travelers remain widely supported.
Other airline CEOs have welcomed the incoming administration, advocating for more resources to enhance infrastructure like air traffic control. American Airlines CEO Robert Isom emphasized the need for further investment and visa approvals to boost U.S. travel. Sun Country Airlines CEO Jude Bricker called for stability and resources at the DOT.
Industry analysts anticipate the new administration could foster a more merger-friendly environment. Despite recent setbacks under President Biden, such as blocked high-profile airline deals, the sector’s leaders remain hopeful for a different approach under Trump. The current DOT has yet to comment on the anticipated changes.
